The curriculum tells the teacher what to teach. A curriculum is a road map that indicates what concepts and skills are taught in what order over time. The concepts and skills in a curriculum are derived from common core state standards of other standards mandated by the New York
Curricula are often organized by chronological units – there are also other excellent patterns of organizations.
The Following Are “Editorial” Comments Regarding The New York State Department Of Education.
ü New York State Department Of Education does not provide curricula – the provide very long lists of concepts and skills that must be taught. It is the district’s responsibility to organize the items in those lists into an organized curriculum.
ü One problem is that New York State Department Of Education often provides list of standards for a discipline such as Math that are so long and extensive that it is difficult to create curricula that provide sufficient time to meaningfully learn the concepts and skills.
ü Another problem is that in some disciplines such as Math, the New York State Department Of Education makes major changes in the K-12 standards every few years which require all school districts to expend funds and time to re-do K-12 curricula.
